Folklore in Japan has enormous cultural significance and tells the story of how Japan became the “land of the rising sun” or how the emperor was chosen by the heavens to rule. Like the Loch Ness monster or the Yeti, there are characters and creatures that have taken on a life of their own and appear in much of Japanese pop culture.
