We started this project in order to support, restore and enhance the role of pollinators, such as bees and bumblebees.
Why are they important? What do the pollinators do?
We have bees and other pollinators like butterflies, hummingbirds and bats, to thank for every third mouthful we eat. Not only do they pollinate our food crops but they are also essential for the survival of wild plants that support our wildlife. These numbers clearly show that:
‘Nearly 90% of the world’s wild flowering plant species depend, entirely, or at least in part, on animal pollination, along with more than 75% of the world’s food crops and 35% of global agricultural land. Not only do pollinators contribute directly to food security, but they are key to conserving biodiversity.’ UN
Why are pollinators under threat?
In the past 50 years the number of bee, moth and butterfly species have decreased by 50%, almost one in ten wild bee species face extinction and three species of bumblebee have become extinct. This is a direct consequence of human activities like the fragmentation and destruction of their habitats through intensification of agriculture and urbanization. Together with the heavy use of pesticides and herbicides the survival of these pollinators is in danger.
How can you help?
It doesn’t matter if you live in the city or countryside. If you have a garden, a flower pot – or no outdoor at all!! There is a very simple way. You can help planting bee-friendly flowers.
Our project aims to help people to take action and sow these beautiful flowers in their gardens and on their balconies, even at kitchen windows. That’s why we are offering free bee/bumblebee-friendly flower seeds with our products for orders inside Europe. Also the joy of watching the flowers grow is an extra bonus. If you have kids around you can use the chance to have an educative fun day with them. Put your bee pin on!
